HEAT TREAT IN FULL BAR LENGTH AND TEST PER ES-1012
ES-1012
Material Acceptance and Heat Treatment of 15-5 PH, VAC CE Stainless Steel Condition H1140
Purpose
To establish material acceptance and heat treatment criteria for 15-5 PH, VAC CE stainless steel material used for components exposed to cyclic loading.
Scope
This standard specifies a heat treatment which is intended to optimize resistance to fatigue failures. Additionally, it requires extensive testing and documentation, per this specification, prior to material lot acceptance.
Standards
Material lot
Definition
Material of the same heat number and with the same cross section.
Material test
Prior to delivery, the material lot shall be sample tested for hardness and transverse charpy to verify its capabilities. Material for three test specimens shall be heat treated (per this specification), machined per drawing B-6366-3 and tested. The test results shall be provided to Flow International Corporation (FLOW) with the material delivery. FLOW Quality Assurance (QA) shall review and file the test results per ISO procedure QS-4B2-02, Control of Records.
Heat treatment
Specifications
Heat treat the material to condition H 1140.
Mechanical properties
Transverse direction
(if cross sectional dimensions allow, otherwise use longitudinal direction)
• Tensile strength 136,000 psi minimum
• Yield strength 107,000 psi minimum
• Elongation 15% minimum
• Reduction of area 49% minimum
• Impact, Charpy V-notch transverse direction, ft-lb @ 40°F 35 minimum
Hardness testing to measure (either)
• BHN (Brinell 3000 kg) 285 minimum, 341 maximum
• Rc (Rockwell C) 30 minimum, 36.7 maximum
Suggested heat treatment procedures
Solution heat
Heat to 1900°F ± 25° in a furnace. Hold at this temperature for 30 - 60 minutes, followed by air cooling to below 90°F.
Precipitation harden
Heat to 1140°F ± 10°F uniformly throughout the material in a furnace. Hold at this temperature for 4 hours, followed by air cooling
